The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
